Acupuncture for knee pain

Knee pain can be highly restrictive. Climbing stairs, walking, getting up from a chair, or exercising suddenly becomes painful when the knee is sensitive or stiff. Acupuncture can be utilized for various forms of knee pain, addressing not just the joint itself, but your overall physical balance.

What causes knee pain?

Knee pain often has a progressive or complex root cause. This can range from physical overload, sports injuries, and irritated tendons to long-term wear and tear of the joint (osteoarthritis). Even unnoticed changes in posture or reduced mobility in the hips and ankles can cause knee issues to persist.

Symptoms vary greatly: from a deep, dull ache to a sharp, stabbing pain when putting weight on the joint. Sometimes the pain only occurs during movement (such as initial stiffness after sitting), while in other cases—especially with inflammation—it is present even at rest, disturbing your sleep.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

How does acupuncture view knee complaints?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we evaluate the flow of energy and blood through and around the knee. Pain and stiffness are seen as stagnation. We distinguish several patterns, including:

Cold and Dampness (Osteoarthritis and stiffness)

Characteristic of degenerative issues or pain that worsens in cold, damp weather. The knee feels stiff and achy, particularly upon starting movement, and responds well to warming therapy.

Stagnation from Overload or Injury

Often the result of an acute twist or sports trauma. A sharp, localized pain occurs because the circulation of blood and energy around the tendons and ligaments is abruptly blocked.

Heat (Inflammation)

The knee joint is swollen, feels warm to the touch, and the pain is throbbing. This indicates active inflammation (such as bursitis or tendinitis), where cooling and rest are essential.

What to expect from the treatment?

Treatment always begins with a comprehensive intake. We examine the onset and progression of your knee pain, your general health, and factors influencing your discomfort. Based on this, we create a personalized plan which may include:

  1. 01Acupuncture using ultra-fine needles, targeting both local points around the knee and distal (distant) points to reduce muscle tension and stimulate circulation.
  2. 02Supplementary techniques such as moxa (gentle warmth), which is highly effective for osteoarthritis and cold-related stiffness to soften rigid joints.
  3. 03Targeted treatment of surrounding muscle groups (like the thighs, calves, and hips) to release compensatory tension.
  4. 04Continuous evaluation of mobility and adjustments to the treatment as needed.

Prefer no needles?

Every treatment can also be carried out completely needle-free with laser acupuncture, in which the same points are treated with therapeutic laser light. Ear acupuncture is always carried out with the laser. Acupressure, which also uses no needles, can be used as well.

Safety and medical alignment:Acupuncture is an exceptionally safe, complementary therapy that works excellently alongside physiotherapy or medical orthopedic treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can benefit from acupuncture for knee pain?

Acupuncture is suitable for knee pain caused by osteoarthritis, stiffness, overuse, sports injuries, or tension around the joint. It is particularly effective when rest alone no longer resolves the symptoms.

Can acupuncture cure osteoarthritis (wear and tear) in the knee?

Acupuncture cannot regenerate worn-away cartilage. However, it can significantly improve blood circulation around the joint, relax surrounding muscles, and dampen inflammatory pain. This often reduces discomfort and greatly improves daily mobility.
